Inspired by Father Ted: Len Football Shirt
Our football shirt tribute to Craggy Island's football team is inspired by the classic 90s sitcom "Father Ted". The embroidered badge features the motto 'Careful Now' - a phrase originating from Dougal's placard whilst protesting the showing of "The Passion of Saint Tibulus"; a blasphemous film at the local theatre. The crow holding glasses is a nod to Jack, who is tormented by crows that dive onto his face and steal his glasses as soon as he leaves the opticians, while the donations box with 'resting in my account' references Ted's excuse for the monies raised to send a little girl to Lourdes being found in his bank account.
The main front sponsor is the Craggy Island Creamery; the company that employs the randy milkman Pat Mustard, estranged father to the island's speight of hairy babies. The cow on the creamery logo wears Pat's milkman's hat. The two cows (one close up and one far away) reference Ted's explanation of how perspective works; Dougal can't get to grips with a real cow that he thinks is the size of a plastic toy cow.
On the rear of the shirt, we have included the name "Len" - the name Dougal repeatedly refers to Bishop Leonard Brennan as, instead of 'Your Grace' - whilst at the bottom, Father Jack's catchphrase appears deliberately subtly (as opposed to his repeated drunken exclamations). The upside-down number 11 is a reference to the occasion when, attempting to rig a raffle to win a car, Ted hands Dougal the winning ticket: number 11. However, when the draw is made, Dougal doesn't raise his hand only to reveal that he hadn't noticed he had the winning ticket as he was looking at it upside down.
The sleeve sponsor is a homage to Mrs Doyle, the long-suffering, chintz-loving, tabard-wearing housekeeper and relentless tea pusher, whilst the all-over kit pattern is based on the 1994 - 1995 Ireland home shirt that Father Dougal wears to bed every night.
