An amalgamation of abolitionist Josiah Wedgewood's 'Am I Not A Man and Brother' medallion created in 1787 as part of a campaign for the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, and the imagery it inspired for the British & Foreign Anti Slavery Society (formed in April 1839), who used it in their letterhead in particular. The original Wedgewood medallion is the most famous depiction of a black person in all of 18th-century art, bringing public attention to abolition. It is unclear who created the actual design for Wedgewood but it was likely either William Hackwood or Henry Webber, both modellers in the Wedgewood factory in Stoke-on-Trent.
