A line taken from Leon Rosselson's famous folk song "The World Turned Upside Down" which itself is loosely based on the 17th Century folk ballad "Levellers and Diggers": "No man has any right to buy and sell the earth for private gain". The Diggers (otherwise known as the "True Levellers") famously sought to set-up egalitarian communities to cultivate common land (in the case of the song, St George's Hill near Weybridge, Surrey). True nonconformists and an inspiration for many over the following three and a half centuries, their time lasted only a couple of years before they were crushed by powerful local landowners.
